Week 3 was National Science Week so there was an extra focus on Science throughout the school.
Science-in-a-Van came to Cockle Bay and ran different workshops for different year groups. Room 18 went to the science show, The Science of Sound with year 4, and learned about sound waves and how sound travels.
We found that different materials (or even lengths of the same material) can make different sounds. |
We found that sound waves need some medium to travel through - here they are travelled through air. |
We learned that sound is caused by vibrations that can fool our brain. |
There were special lunchtime Science sessions each day during Science Week. Andrew was one of the main scientists on Tuesday when we experimented with dry ice.
In the afternoon, there was enough frozen carbon dioxide for us to do further investigations in Room 18. We had to be careful as the carbon dioxide is so cold it is frozen into ice and would actually give you a burn if it touched your skin. We worked in small groups so no one had to crowd round, wore protective gloves and used tongs to keep ourselves safe.
When the frozen ice was put in water, it released gas which looked like mist. |
At the end of the day, we added liquid soap which made the solution bubble! |
