Weka Day Camp chapter books

After our day camp, we spilt into writing groups and each group collaborated to make its own chapter book.  We each wrote a chapter and drew a picture with pastels to illustrate it.

Here are a selection of camp art, but you can see everyone's work on the Visual Arts page:

Here is an illustration of our tramp.
Here is an illustration of the orienteering.

Here is an illustration of cooking sausages.

Here is an illustration of erecting tents.
Here are the writers with their finished publications:

Kento, Liam, Jeremy and Green are the Adventure Writers.

Charlize, Kavesha, Taylor and Hayden are the Weka Writers.

Andrew, Rylee, Summer and Alyssa are the Camp Writers.

Ronnie, Bonnie, kate and Charlotte are the Botanic Garden writers.

Luke, Nico, Lincoln and Juwon are the Camping Machines.
Here are the promotional photo shoots of each writers' group:

Outdoor Classroom Day

Luckily this year, the National Outdoor Classroom Day was sunny and dry.  We went outdoors to do our Maths.  We used 30cm rulers to measure all the different things we could find in the Oak Tree Walk.

Sometimes, when we found extra long things like flax, we joined two rulers together to get our measurement.  Mathematicians call this 'tiling'.

We recorded our measurements in our Maths books.

Weka Day Camp

When we arrived at our base camp near Totara Park in the Auckland Botanic Garden, we were organised into three groups.  Each group rotated through the same camping activities, but in a different order.

The camp wagon had a chalkboard showing the rotations.

This sign kept us safe!

You needed to follow this map to find the flags when we were doing orienteering.

Rylee's Dad's group were pretty tired after finding some of the orienteering flags, but were soon ready to have another go!
We followed a map of Totara Park on our tramp through the bush.

We stayed in the camp circle to cook our sausages.

We liked relaxing inside the tent once we had finally got it erected.

Don't go to sleep, Mrs Bear!

Tramping on the Weka Day Ccamp

Year 3 students go on a Weka Day Camp at the start of term 4 every year.  We go to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, and one of the camping activities we do is to go on an hour long tramp through the bush near our base camp.  Here is a video of one group as they started their walk through the bush:

Lloyd Elsmore trip

The Weka Team went to Lloyd Elsmore Swimming Complex to learn about water safety and to improve our confidence in the water.  We were divided into three groups, and each group rotated around three different activities: kayaking, snorkelling and CPR.  Everyone had a go, even the eskimo rolls!
