Marimba Band in action!

This you tube clip features Room 18 students performing in the Cockle Bay School Marimba Band at the Marimba Festival on 31st August.  Special thanks to Mr McCully for all his tuition and encouragement.

The Marimba Band

Six students from Room 18 are in the Cockle Bay School Marimba band.  After many lunchtime practices with Mr McCully, the band performed in the Marimba Festival, with many other schools from the Auckland region.  Congratulations to Luke, Liam, Jeremy, Taylor, Hayden and Lincoln on their performance.

Multiplication Quiz

We have been concentrating on learning our times tables in Room 18, at school in Maths time and at home in our basic facts home learning.  People have been making and using fortune tellers for 10x, 5x, 2x and 3x tables.

After three weeks' practice, it was time to have the Multiplication Quiz 2019.  Here are our groups in action against the clock and each other:

Fathers' Day

Having celebrated Mothers' Day earlier in the year, it was only fair that we also celebrated Fathers' Day!  We made Fathers' Day cards and also wrote a description of our dad.  Here are a couple,  but you can read them all on the WRITING page.  We certainly have some cool dude Dads out there!

Lloyd Elsmore trip

The Weka Team went to Lloyd Elsmore Swimming Complex to learn about water safety and to improve our confidence in the water.  We were divided into three groups, and each group rotated around three different activities: kayaking, snorkelling and CPR.  Everyone had a go, even the eskimo rolls!

Weka Assembly presentation

In week 4, the Weka Team ran the whole school assembly.  We sang a waiata and did a Jump Jam routine as a team.  Each class also did an individual item.  Room 18 did a presentation about kauri die-back, as we have been learning about it through the Squawk Squad.   The Squawk Squad is a national wide environmental club for primary school which helps us learn about and protect New Zealand's native forests and birds.

Here are  the slides that accompanied our presentation:

Year 3 Gymnastics Team

Kate, Charlotte, Luke, Lincoln, Hayden, Taylor from Room 18 are all part of the Middle School Gymnastics Team.  They have been coming to school early on Wednesday mornings to practice in the hall for several weeks.

The Cockle Bay gymnastics team competed against other schools in East Auckland.  Everyone did a great job, especially Kate and Luke who will compete in the Champ of Champions competition later in the term.

We felt very proud that we had so many people from Room 18 in the gymnastics team.  Another cool thing about it was that, when they were away at the gymnastic competition, there were enough chrome books to go round.  We had a whole morning doing all our work on our own computer - Maths, Writing, Reading and publishing.  It made for a very quiet, calm learning environment.
